Millions of Brits want to get their teeth professionally whitened - and pregnant people are no exception.
In fact, according to a recent survey* almost a quarter of people admitted they would consider the procedure.

So it’s easy to see why people are looking to sign up for whitening with Pro Smile® for teeth whitening every day.

But can you actually have teeth whitening while you’re pregnant? Is it safe to go ahead and start having the treatment while you’re expecting a little one?

Unfortunately, the short answer is no.

It’s actually illegal for a dentist to administer teeth whitening professionally when a patient is pregnant.

And if you’ve already had your baby and are now breastfeeding it’s also not advised that you go ahead with teeth whitening at that point.

These are precautions only but, in our view, very sensible rules because the baby always comes first.

There are several reasons why having your teeth whitened while pregnant would be a bad idea.

There isn’t currently enough clinical research to know if the ingredients could cause damage to your unborn child.

But we do know that when someone is pregnant, the risks associated with most activities and things you put into your system increase.

People’s teeth are also more sensitive during pregnancy, so it’s not the best time to be applying whitening gels as this could cause enhanced irritation and sensitivity.

Finally, although we don’t have solid evidence about any potential harmful impact on the foetus, that’s not to say that there isn’t any.

So for all of the reasons listed here, Pro Smile® and other professional dentists will never offer teeth whitening to an expectant parent.

However, there are no such restrictions on over-the-counter and online products because there simply aren’t the checks in place.

Many of these could potentially be dangerous to both the foetus and the expectant parent and should absolutely be avoided.

In fact, these should be avoided by everybody - parent-to-be or not - as they can often do more harm than good.

Professional whitening can only be prescribed by a dentist. This is very important to remember as there are a LOT of dangerous products on the market which promise whitening but simply can’t and won’t deliver.

If you’re expecting a baby and would like whiter teeth, we suggest waiting until you’ve had your bundle of joy and completely finished breastfeeding, if you had chosen to.

Then and only then should you get in touch with the Pro Smile® team. We’ll then be happy to begin your procedure, which you’ll be able to do from home.

Pro Smile® is the first-ever dentist-grade teeth whitening service you complete 100% from home.

It’s perfect for busy new parents who might have a toddler running around the house as you don’t need to find time in your hectic day to fit in a trip to your local dentist surgery.

Everything with Pro Smile® happens from home, giving you the freedom and flexibility to fit in a video call with one of our UK registered dentists at a time that suits you and your family.

Pro Smile® is a prescription-based service which is required to meet prescription criteria. So once you’ve completed all of the necessary paperwork, we’ll supervise the first application of your gel via a virtual call to ensure the highest standards are being met. You’ll then be given access to the “clients only” area of our website for more information and to continue your course of treatment.

So the bad news for pregnant people is you will have to wait a little while longer before starting your teeth whitening journey with Pro Smile.

For everybody else, the good news is that professional teeth whitening is totally safe and something that millions of people around the world benefit from every year.

Not only will whitening your teeth make your teeth look better, it can also make you feel more confident and boost self-esteem.
